ABOUT WIPRO
The infant stage of WIPRO was before India attained independence, in 1945 as a small vegetable oil company – Western Indian Vegetable Products. Mohamedhusain Hashim Premji at the age of twenty-one inherited his father’s grain trade which he expanded to manufacturing. His first venture was this oil company in which his wife Dr. Gulbanoo Premji served as Chairperson of the company. She also actively participated in setting up an orthopedic children’s hospital in Mumbai, later by her support a cerebral palsy unit was set up. The untimely death of Mohamedhusain at the age of 51 resulted in the taking over by his son Azim. H Premji.
The ascension of Mr. Premji in 1978 carried the business from a commodity based vegetable oil maker to a brand- oriented company. They moved their office to a new building in Mumbai and formally registered their company name as WIPRO.
The revolutionary step of WIPRO into information and technology was in the year 1979 with the recruitment of its first members to this new division.By 1989 WIPRO established itself as a diversified manufacturer of computer systems, consumer products and industrial equipment. They dive more into the business market of IT as the IT field was growing tremendously across the world. WIPRO changed their headquarters to Bangalore in 1996, where it still continues.
