BYJU’s Learning app was released in 2015 and has been a big hit. It is used by over 15 million students across the globe and has 9,00,000 paying customers. The app allows children to acquire knowledge by themselves rather than being spoon-fed. Its approach blends learning re-invention, world-class teachers, tried-and-true pedagogical approaches, and personalised learning.
Byju Raveendran, BYJU’s founder and CEO, was born in Azhikode, Kerala, in 1980. He graduated from the Government Engineering College in Kannur, Kerala, with a B.Tech in mechanical engineering. Byju Raveendran served as a service engineer for a multinational shipping corporation before founding BYJU’s. His passion, however, was teaching, which motivated him to establish BYJU’s.
He initially took free mathematics workshops before charging a fee once he felt confident in his abilities. At one point, his sessions were so successful that over 20000 students attended one of them. He began filming recordings of the sessions he organised in 2009.
Former students from the IIMs pushed him to establish classes at BYJU. The company ‘Think and Learn Pvt Ltd’ was then established to generate content for school kids. In 2015, he released Byju’s – The Learning App, which was downloaded by over 5.5 million people in its first year.
BYJU’s earns money in three ways:
- The first is done using the app. After the 15-day free trial period, students must purchase the courses in order to keep their educational experience on BYJU’s. The app provides a range of test series, programmes, and other features that entice users to make a purchase.
- Customers must purchase electronic tablets from BYJU’s when they purchase the duration of their choosing. This tablet contains movies, tests, practise questions, quizzes, and other course-related materials.
- Classroom instruction is the final revenue generation strategy. These classes are only available in a few cities.

The company offers an online as well as direct educational instructions from class 1 to aspirants of qualifying exams like JEE main, NEET, CAT etc. Byju’s has developed an application for learning to make it easier and interesting to students with specially designed videos and lectures.
