What is dialysis?
dialysis is a treatment that filters and purify the blood using a machine .It keeps your Fluids and electrolytes in balance when the kidney can’t do their job.It is the process of removing waste products and excess Fluids from our body. Dialysis allows patients with kidney failure. Life expectancy on dialysis can vary depending on your other medical conditions. Average life expectancy on dialysis is 5 to 10 years .many patients have lived well for 20 or 30 years.
Dialysis is used in patients with rapidly developing acute kidney injury or stage 5 chronic kidney disease and end stage of Kidney Disease.
For dialysis in a laboratory a tubular semipermeable membrane made of nitrocellulose is used. when your Kidneys can’t perform the functions like a control BP ,regulate the level of chemical elements like Sodium and potassium in the blood and activate the form of Vitamin D due to diseases or injury, dialysis can help keep the body running as possible.
Types of dialysis
- hemodialysis
It is used on artificial kidney to remove waste and extra fluid from the blood. The blood filtered through artificial kidney and returned to body with the help of Dialysis machine. This treatment usually last 3 to 5 hours. Three time per week.
- Peritoneal dialysis
It involves surgery to implant a peritoneal dialysis catheter into your abdomen. The Catheter helps filter blood through peritoneum. once the dialysate deaws waste out of the bloodstream, drained from your abdomen. This treatment takes few hours and repeated 4 to 6 times per day
- Continuous renal replacement
It is used primarily in the ICU for people with acute kidney failure. A machine passes blood through tubing filter. Remove waste products and water the blood return to body along with replacement fluid .It is performed 12 to 24 hours per day.
In chronic kidney disease ,the kidney rarely get better. You must go on dialysis permanently.
India has 950 nephrologist all over the country, 700 dialysis centres ,4000 dialysis machines, 20000 patients undergoing dialysis, 170 government recognised transplant centres ,3500 transplant annually .
