Hand blocking is an ancient method of textile printing, it is used for exotic designs in brant colours on fabric. Wooden blocks are carved with intricate details and are used to print beautiful designs and cover the length of a fabric. First you should select a design on wooden blocks. This block is two or three inches thick. It is created with lime, wood ,teak, holly or sycamore . The upper part is flattened and smooth. Then you should transfer the design onto the block. It is first created on a paper outlined on the block using lamp black and oil.

Then using a block cutter to begin carving. It is created around heavier masses and finer portions are handled. After the large masses are cut the designs stand out like a letter press. If we look at a hand block fabric we can observe several fine details. It is very difficult to achieve these details by carving them directly into wood. You can build up in strips of metal and drive and into the printing surface. It is called coppering, which is the process that creates delicate flowers,  stars and other pretty things that we adore in hand block prints.

Separated blocks are required for different colours. They use up to 30 blocks for hand block printing. The fabric to be printed is stretched out tightly on a printing table. A colour fever is used to create the colour. Colour sieve is a tub filled with dye and starch paste. You can use eco-friendly dyes for traditional hand block printing.

First stretching the required amount of cloth from the roll and securing it and marking the initial position where the first print is to be made. The engraved block is immersed in the dye. Then pressed it firmly on the clothes and struck on the back to create a solid shape. Then the second impression is created in the same manner. There is an incredible amount of skill needed to ensure the princes are created in continuous fashion. It is depending on the simple pins placed that are specific positions for the next placement.

An experienced printer can ensure the print is continuous without breaking. We can print more than one colour at the same time using toying. It is a special colour sieve containing compartments with different colours. This arrangement ensures that the colour stays within specified boundaries. When the block is pressed onto the sieve, each compartment takes up a different colour and transferred to the cloth.

Colour fixing is a labour intensive process,it creates ethnic prints on sustainable textiles with the natural fibres. It is used organic to leave some unique and technical design on the fabric. When the ink is properly embedded with the fabric it does not fade with wash. There are many ways to make the print on the textile.
